N-acetylcysteine, commonly abbreviated as NAC, is more stable than L-cysteine and it may be better absorbed.

NAC has antioxidant activity that may be especially protective of liver cells. It is the main precursor to glutathione, a major antioxidant and detoxifying enzyme in the human body. This is used to bind to toxins and aid in toxin excretion. NAC functions to replenish glutathione levels inside cells and the liver, as part of the body’s natural antioxidant and detoxification processes.

NAC supports the growth and formation of connective tissue, especially hair, skin and nails. It is necessary for the healing and regeneration of skin cells. Hair and skin are made up 10-14% cysteine. As a potent antioxidant it also contributes to the protection of cells from the ravages of free radical damage, which occurs as part of the natural ageing process.
