Lutein and zeaxanthin are two carotenoid pigments that occur naturally in many plants, and are found in high concentrations in the macula of the eye. A third carotenoid in the macula, called meso-zeaxanthin, can’t be obtained from food sources and is created in the retina from ingested lutein. A good supply of these antioxidant nutrients is critical for maintaining healthy eye function, and the same nutrients are also strongly linked to healthy brain function and cognitive performance.
