One form, hexavalent chromium, is used in industry and is very toxic. The only form that humans can use is the nontoxic trivalent form. It was in the 1950's that trivalent chromium was identified as the active component of glucose tolerance factor (GTF). 

In the 1970's chromium was identified as an essential element in human nutrition after individuals on total parenteral nutrition developed diabetes that would not respond to insulin until chromium was added to the intravenous nutrient solution.
