Millions of microorganisms, collectively known as the microbiome, play crucial roles within the body to support overall health and wellness. However, they function better when in balance and when this delicate balance is disrupted; the impact on the body can be unpleasant. Diversity is key when it comes to maintaining a healthy microbiome.  When we say diversity, we are referring to a broad range of microorganisms, both the species and strains. Modern medicine provides treatments that all serve very unique purposes however, antibiotics, chemotherapy and other medications as well as lifestyle and food choices, can impact greatly on the microbiome leading to impaired digestive performance. 

Prebiotics are well known for supporting healthy bacteria growth, like fertiliser for the good bacteria in the gut. Prebiotics are often non-digestible, but fermentable dietary fibre and oligosaccharides. Whilst prebiotics can be useful in supporting the growth of certain bacteria, they offer limited impact on improving microbiome diversity. 

Probiotics are live bacteria; sometimes called ‘good’ bacteria. They are often recommended to improve the intestinal environment, but they function first and foremost as seeds to help colonise the GI Tract. Whilst there are some key bacteria and yeast associated with a healthy microbiome, in general, the greater the diversity, the better the microbiome functions, leading to overall optimal wellness. In particular the omega-3 DHA plays a significant role in gut flora diversity, therefore a blend with higher levels of DHA to EPA can support the growth of healthy gut bacteria within the digestive tract. Aqua-Biome™ uses a unique extraction process called “Targeted Molecular Enrichment Technology” (TMET), a process that overcomes some of the major disadvantages with other commercial methods of concentrating fish oil. Processes like super critical fluid extraction, molecular distillation and column separation concentrate EPA and DHA, but unfortunately, it is at the expense of DPA and other omega-3 fatty acids.

 

These other processes separate toxins and impurities by weight; however, some toxic molecules may have similar weight to the good oils. TMET goes that extra mile by not only separating molecules by weight, by also by molecular charge and polarity. The entire TMET process is also green in that it does not rely on harsh solvents, or other toxic chemicals, commonly used in other extraction methods to concentrate the oil for the omega-3 fatty acids.
